I have always loved having a cheese ball to snack on as a holiday appetizer, and I have the best classic cheese ball recipe just for you. It’s quick, simple, and takes only 10 minutes to prepare. Now that’s what I like when it comes to bringing an appetizer to your holiday gathering.

This homemade cheese ball is so versatile and can be customized to your families liking. Not a fan of pecans, roll the cheese ball in almonds or bacon crumbles. Do you like a little spice? Try adding some hot sauce for a little kick! The possibilities are endless, and will taste much bette than store bought!

You might just want to make two cheese balls from scratch because they are that good. Once you set them out on the table, they will be gone in no time!

  • Cream Cheese
  • Sour Cream
  • Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning
  • Dried Dill
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • Pecans
  • Crackers For Serving

How to make this easy classic cheese ball

  • In a medium size mixing bowl beat softened cream cheese, sour cream, ranch seasoning, and dried dill with a hand mixer. Mix until well combined and creamy.
  • Stir in shredded cheese until combined.
  • Place cheese mixture on a sheet of saran wrap and form into a ball.
  • Refrigerate for at least one hour.

  • Roll cheese ball in pecans until well coated, while keeping the shape of a ball.

How to store homemade cheeseballs?

Because cheese balls have dairy in them, they need to be kept in the fridge when not being served. If you happen to have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Tips and tricks for making the best cheese ball

I have added a few tips and tricks that I find come in handy when making a homemade cheese ball.

  • Be sure to add a crunchy coating to give the cheese ball some texture.
  • Skip the pre shredded cheese. Freshly grated cheese is much better, because it has more flavor and doesn’t have the waxy coating like pre shredded.
  • Homemade cheese balls need to be chilled in order to keep a ball shape, and before adding the chopped pecans.
  • If you chill overnight, let it rest at room temperature for at least 2 minutes before serving.
  • Use a butter knife to spread the cheese on your crackers, this will keep your crackers from breaking if you dig right in.
  • Finely chop the pecans, this will help them coat the cheese better.
